Last BOB

Hi Its Joyce!! =)

Throughout the semester, I have learned so much during my time in math class.

I think my most strongest point is the 'Wages and Salaries' Unit.
Remember these are the steps to calculate Gross Pay with overtime and regular pay.

Step 1 Add all the hours together
Step 2 Figure out your overtime hours (Subtract total hours by your regular hours)
Step 3 Overtime pay = (wage)(Overtime hours)(overtime rate)
Step 4 Regular pay = (wage)(regular hour)
Step 5 Gross Pay = Overtime pay + Regular Pay

My second strongest point is the 'Personal Banking' Unit
We learned about cheques and transactions. Just remember to keep track of what you are spending, so you don't get ripped off. =)

My third strongest unit is 'Consumer Decisions' This is my favorite. Alot of fun, fun, fun!
We learned how to...
- find the unit price of one
- find the GST, PST, or HST.
In my opinion, this unit was the best yet because you can actually use your knowledge from class to figure out the exact amount of money you are going to spend. Which I did, and surprised that my friends ask me how much something costs. They actually said I was smart 8)

My fourth is the 'Geometry' Unit. I already knew this kind of stuff from past experience.

My weakest topics are ratios. Sometimes I just don't understand alot of times. To be honest, ratios are hard for me and hard to understand. =)

This BOB isn't much. But if you want help, feel free to ask ;D I'll be available anytime if you want help, tell me in advance ;D

Good luck in the exams =)

To end this BOB, I am grateful that I get to experience math in a different way using the smartboard. It was really fun participating and writing on the board. I am also happy that I get to share this experience with you guys =)

Good luck to you all in the future =)
Joyce

Consumer Decisions

I learned a lot in this unit. This unit helped me gained more knowledge about taxes and sales. In real life, my mom asked me how much this jacket at GAP was. I told her the right amount with the 25% off sale and the PST and GST. When we went to the cashier, I was right. =) I felt so proud of myself.

Before I never knew about how to do all these taxes and sales. But I'm so happy I learned about it. This unit really helps me a lot especially in real life.

We learned about finding the unit price of one. Like for example,

At a fruit and vegetable stand, a dozen apples sells for $2.50. What is the price of one apple?

$2.50 / 12 = $0.21

So the unit price of one apple is $0.21

Then we learned about GST, PST, HST.

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax

PST stands for Provincial Sales Tax

HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax. Harmonized Sales Tax is a combination of federal and provincial tax.

Here is an example of how to find GST and PST.

A customer purchases a new suit. The price of the suit is $285.00. What is the cost to the customer after GST and PST are added? The suit is purchased in Ontario.

Price of suit is $285.00

Now find GST and PST by converting the percent to decimal place. A reminder that PST in Ontario is 8%

GST - 6% / 100 = 0.06

PST - 8% / 100 = 0.08

Now multiply the price of the suit with the GST and then PST.

GST - $285.00 * 0.06 = $17.10

PST - $285.00 * 0.08 = $22.80

Now add the taxes together.

$17.10 + $22.80 = $39.90

Now add the price of the suit and the total taxes.

$285.00 + $39.90 = $ 324.90

And now, your done =)

Now here is an example of calculating HST.

Paul went to an electronic store and bought a CD player advertized at $450.00, a set of speakers at $235.00, and a portable telephone at $189.00. How much did he have to pay altogether including taxes? He bought these items in Nova Scotia.

Add all the prices together first.

$450.00 + $235.00 + $189.00 = $874.00

Now find HST of the total price of all the items that is being bought. HST in Nova Scotia is 14%

HST - $874.00 * 0.14 = $122.36

Add the total price of the items being bought and HST.

$874.00 + $122.36 = $996.36

Et Votre Fait! Yay! ( And Your Done! Yay! ) Hehe.

We also learned about the golden ratio.

Hello, Its me Joyce.

During this past few weeks I have learned alot about spreadsheets and the different kinds of spreadsheets I never knew before.

When doing spreadsheets you always have to read the directions very carefully. If you don't, it won't work.

When you type in a formula, we always have to have an "=" sign (equal sign). If there isn't a equal sign, IT ISN'T A FORMULA, it would be called a value.

A Label is a cell with words and a Value is a cell with numbers.

We looked at google spreadsheets and pbwiki spreadsheets.

This is what I learned in this unit =)

Good Luck on the test everyone =) and take your time =)

Always Smile,
Joyce

Scribe, November 8, 2007

Today, we did some mental math. Then we headed to the mac lab and did our first spreadsheet/first assignment.

Whats important in spreadsheets is that you have to follow the directions very carefully, using the addresses like for example, C3 .

Today for our assignment we had to copy what was on the spreadsheet and then we clicked the link that brings us to a written part of our assignment, which we had to follow carefully.

If one 'value', 'label', or 'formula' isn't placed correctly, everything will be messed up.

=) There isn't much we did.

The next scribe will be, Deaarly.

Hello, sorry if i misspelt some words, i can't type on this computer well. Its slow, so anyways.

Everything we've learned about wages and salaries are kind of easy to me.

Finding the gross pay by multiplying how many hours you worked and your regular hourly pay.

Gross pay = (Regular Hourly Pay) (Hours you worked)

Ex.

Gross pay = ($9.00) (40) = $ 360.00

Then it gets more specific if you worked more hours than usual. Then you have to figure out their overtime hours, then their overtime pay. After you figure out those two, then you have to find your regular hours and your regular pay. After all of that, you add the overtime pay and the regular pay.

Step 1
Add all the hours together
Step 2
Figure out your overtime hours (Subtract total hours by your regular hours)
Step 3
Overtime pay = (wage)(Overtime hours)(overtime rate)
Step 3
Regular pay = (wage)(regular hour)
Step 4
Gross Pay = Overtime pay + Regular Pay

Ex.
Chang M.
M-10 T-7 W-8 TH-8.5 F-9
Hourly Wage $7.65
Earns time and a half if they work more than 40 hours.

1. 10+7+8+8.5+9 = 42.5 of hours

2. 42.5 - 40 = 2. 5 overtime hours

3. ($7.65) (2.5) (1.5) = $28.69 overtime pay

4. ($7.65) (40) = $306.00 regular pay

5. $28.69 + 306.00 = $334.69 Gross pay

Pretty simple right? Sometimes its 'double pay' instead of 'time and a half'. Just read questions carefully.

Then we learned about using timecards. The first time, i had a difficult time, but i understood after one whole class and did the questions that were from homework and the example from the smartboard.

Sometimes when your a minute late to work, you get 1 quarter(.25) taken away from your pay. Also, pretend your late 16 minutes, then it would be half (.5) taken away. And so on..

I found it alot easier if you keep practicing on the questions that you have most difficult. For me, I'm still rusty on my timecards. But if i keep practicing the questions all over. It would be easy for me at the end.

Remember everyone, do your homework. =)
Also! Good Luck on the test =)

September 06, 2007 Scribe

Today in class we learned about Sisyphus if he was a villain, victim, or hero. Most people thought he was a villain because of all the cruel things he done to people and should be punished. I'm not sure if anybody said he was a victim. Mr. Kuropatwa says in his opinion, he is a hero. He said that Sisyphus knows that the boulder is going to roll down the mountain. But he just goes back down and starts pushing it up the mountain without a tantrum or a fuss. He also said to remember Sisyphus.

We also talked about the curve of forgetting, attendance policy, the critical path to success, and the escalator video.
