Just remember to keep track of what you are spending, so you don't get ripped off. =)<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#999900;">My third strongest unit is 'Consumer Decisions' This is my favorite. Alot of fun, fun, fun!<br />We learned how to...<br />- find the unit price of one<br />- find the GST, PST, or HST.<br />In my opinion, this unit was the best yet because you can actually use your knowledge from class to figure out the exact amount of money you are going to spend. Which I did, and surprised that my friends ask me how much something costs. They actually said I was smart 8)</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#33cc00;">My fourth is the 'Geometry' Unit. I already knew this kind of stuff from past experience.<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#6600cc;">My weakest topics are ratios. Sometimes I just don't understand alot of times. To be honest, ratios are hard for me and hard to understand. =)</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#3333ff;">This BOB isn't much. You are very lucky to have Mr. Kuropatwa as your teacher as I know he is someone that really "gets it", and he understands that learning is about connecting, and that learning is an important activity at all ages.<br /><br />I work in a Faculty of Education where I help university students learn to become teachers. If any of you ever consider a career in education, I'd love to be able to give advice to you. people , I will share what I have learned in today's class topic which is about similar<br /><br />triangles. For you to know if triangles are similar the ratios should be the same and the angles<br /><br />should be " congruent ". Also we marked each others papers. Usually Mr Kuropatwa explains all the mental math questions on how to do them in a helpful way And if u still don't understand the question he will try and explain it again bit by bit or making it more easier to understand. After the mental math questions Mr K put us in groups. I was number 3 but moved to 4 =S. Anyways he put us in groups because its better to find out what other people have for the answers to the booklet. There are many ways to answer a question. Like different kinds of answers that u don't even know about that other people do. It is helpful to people if they don't understand the question or if they do understand the question they might want to know what new things on other peoples minds. And you even get to make new friends :D If we didn't do our homework then we had to do it in class. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">There is one question i didn't understand in the booklet. This is my second scribe post since September 10th. This unit helped me gained more knowledge about taxes and sales. In real life, my mom asked me how much this jacket at GAP was. I told her the right amount with the 25% off sale and the PST and GST. When we went to the cashier, I was right. =) I felt so proud of myself.<br /><br />Before I never knew about how to do all these taxes and sales. But I'm so happy I learned about it. This unit really helps me a lot especially in real life.<br /><br />We learned about finding the unit price of one. Like for example,<br /><br /><em><span style="color:#990000;">At a fruit and vegetable stand, a dozen apples sells for $2.50. What is the price of one apple?</span></em><br /><br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;">$2.50 / 12 = $0.21</span></em><br /><br /><span style="color:#990000;">So the unit price of one apple is $0.21</span><br /><span style="color:#990000;"></span><br /><br /><span style="color:#000000;">Then we learned about GST, PST, HST.</span><br /><br />GST stands for Goods and Services Tax<br /><br />PST stands for Provincial Sales Tax<br /><br />HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax. Harmonized Sales Tax is a combination of federal and provincial tax.<br /><br /><br /><br />Here is an example of how to find GST and PST.<br /><br /><br /><em><span style="color:#cc6600;">A customer purchases a new suit. The price of the suit is $285.00. What is the cost to the customer after GST and PST are added? The suit is purchased in Ontario.</span></em><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff9900;">Price of suit is $285.00</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;color:#666666;">Now find GST and PST by converting the percent to decimal place. How much did he have to pay altogether including taxes? We talked about how are body and alot of other things will work this way.For example If you measure your arm, and then your elbow and down and you divide the long ways by the short way you will get the number 1.618 (That is the Golden Ratio) and if it`s not 1.618 it will be very close.<br /> <br />After we talked about that we went to a question about sales and rate savings.Here's an example.<br /><br />Corey buys a jacket on sale for $53.99. Before the sale the jacket cost $63.89. What is her percent rate of savings?<br /> 1. First you have to divide the sale price by the original price.<br /> sale price/original price = $53.99/$63.89 = 0.8450<br /> 2. Then you round it off.<br /> 0.8450 rounded off to 0.85 = 85%<br /> 3. Which store has the lowest unit price?<br /><span style="color:#ffcccc;">Step 1</span>:You have to divide it by itself to get one.<br /><span style="color:#ffcc99;">Step 2</span>:You have to divide the same thing to the price.<br /><span style="color:#99ff99;">Step 3</span>:You have to comair the unit price of each store and see who has the lowest price.<br />First you have to find out how much the unit price is for one can for each store.<br /><br />For the first store there`s <span style="color:#3366ff;">three cans for $3.19</span> . When we finished correcting the papers, Mr.Kuropatwa began talking about <strong>Sales Tax</strong>.<br /><br /><ul><br /><li>Sales Tax consists of <em><strong>GST</strong></em> and <strong><em>PST:<br /></em>GST:</strong><em> </em><span style="color:#cc0000;">Goods &amp; Services Tax </span><span style="color:#000000;">(if buying basic needs such as food, clothes)<br /></span><strong>PST:</strong><em> </em><span style="color:#33cc00;">Provincial Sales Tax </span></li></ul><br /><p><span style="color:#000000;">Mr.Kuropatwa had told us about taxes and how they change every year. He also mentioned a thing or two about what kind of things were never taxed. Such as books, because they contain information to educate, and food because its basic requirement.</span><br /></p><br /><p><span style="color:#cc0000;"><strong><em>Goods &amp; Services Tax</em></strong></span><br /></p><br /><p>Some examples of <span style="color:#cc0000;">GST</span> would be:</p><br /><ul><br /><li>If you buy 6 dozen muffins, you won't be taxed. </li><li>If you buy less than 6 items, you were buying a "service".</li><li>Buying 6 muffins you wouldn't get taxed. (prepared foods)</li><li>A haircut is not a good, it's a service.</li><li>Getting a car fixed is buying a service, which means you get taxed.<br /><strong><em><span style="color:#33cc00;"></span></em></strong></li></ul><p><strong><em><span style="color:#33cc00;">Provincial Sales Tax</span></em></strong> </p><ul><li><span style="color:#000000;">anything sold in a province gets taxed.</span> </li></ul><p><strong>Example:</strong> </p><ul><li>used car - no GST</li><li>new car - both GST &amp; PST</li></ul><p>Some provinces have <strong>HST</strong> such as <em>New Brunswick</em>, <em>P.E.I</em> and <em>Quebec. HST</em> stands for <strong>Harmonized Sales Tax.</strong><br /></p><br /><p>We were given an example to find the Final price of a new computer when taxes are included</p><p><strong>EXAMPLE: </strong>Dave lives in Nelson, British columbia. How much tax will he have to pay to buy a new computer that costs $2565.00? I was absent the day our class started the unit, so the next day when we were doing our mental math about spreadsheets, i was lost. After we reviewed the answers, i understood almost every concept. You don't need to know much about spreadsheets, to know how to do one. All you need to know, basically, is what a label is, what a formula is, and what a value is.<br /><br />A <span style="color:red;"><b>label</b></span> usually consists of ONLY letters in a cell. A <span style="color:red;"><b>formula</b></span> is an equation beginning with an equal sign (<i>very important</i>), and a <span style="color:red;"><b>value</b></span> is content in a cell that consists of nothing other than numbers. Along with this, you're also going to have to know how to identify cells. Cells are the little boxes that make up the spreadsheet.<br /><br />Along the <u>top</u> of the spreadsheets are <u>letters</u> of the alphabet, and along the <u>left-hand side</u> are numbers. The proper way to identify a cell is to first find the column in which the cell is in, go all the way to the top, and remember the letter. Then find the row in which the cell is located, go all the way to the left, and remember the number. If you're typing in a label, you should type <span style="color:red;"><u><strong>NOTHING</strong></u></span> other than letters or words, with the acception of dates and such. If you're typing in a formula, letters and numbers are allowed, but you <span style="color:red;"><b>MUST</b></span> remember to place an equal sign (<span style="color:red;"><b>=</b></span>) before it, or it won't work the way it should. If you were to type in a value, there should be <span style="color:red;"><b>NOTHING</b></span> but numbers in that cell.<br /><br />When you put a <u>label</u> into your spreadsheet, it should automatically align to the <i>left</i> of the cell, unless it is further formatted. Opposite of labels, <u>values</u> are automatically aligned to the <i>right</i> of the cell, again, unless it is further formatted. <u>Formulas</u> are similar to labels, they are aligned to the <i>left</i>, and then automatically calculated to show the answer. You'll find that when you type the formula in, the answer will show up in the cell, but in the textbox, the formula is still there.<br /><br />Speaking of formulas, there are a variety of formulas that are already there for you to use. You can find them all listed under the 'formulas' tab just along the top of the actual spreadsheet. Not all spreadsheet programs are the same, so you might have to search for a button that says 'formulas'. Mr. Kuropatwa tried to explain how to answer the questions while we were marking our papers, because a few students had a little difficulty coming up with solutions. The first question was tricky; it asked us what would appear in the spreadsheet cell if "8*2" was in it. Some students made the mistake of multiplying it together. You'd actually put "8*2" in the cell, because the result of the equation doesn't appear unless the formula has an = before it.<br /><br />After correcting our mental math sheets, the class headed to the maclab to do some work online. Although it's not part of math, it is still very important. Other than that, we did our daily mental math and I believe that many of us were having difficulties with the problems. Most of us were confused about multiplying the percents with another number. It would be easier if you just find the percent of the number, rather than multiplying them. The answer would still be correct if you multiply both the number and the percent. Why? The thing is, you divide by 100 because the percent symbol means to <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">divide by 100</span>. Here is an example:<br /><br />25% x 68<br />50% of 68 = 34<br />25 % of 68 = 17<br /><br /><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">OR</span><br /><br />25% x 68 = 1700%<br />1700% / 100% = 17<br /><br />We also did a quiz, which wasn't too hard. Still, many of us had some problems here and there.
